April 1

1923: Winter persists into April as temperatures fall to a record cold 8 degrees at Lansing and 9 degrees at Muskegon. (14° at Grand Rapids)

1970: An April Fool’s Day snowstorm drops 10 inches of snow on Lansing. Another 7 inches of snow falls the next day. In Grand Rapids the day started with 5” on the ground. The snow fall here was 1.6” on the 1st with 6.2” falling on the 2nd and we had 9” on the ground on the 3rd Lansing had 11” on the ground on the 3rd Muskegon had 3.7” on the 1st and 1.7” on the 2nd. For a very snowy start to April in 1970. Not sure when the snow fell but the highs were in the upper 30’s and the lows were in the mid 20’s the highs might have held down the snow fall totals.

Here in Grand Rapids the top 3 coldest low for April 1st are 13° in 1954, 14° in 1923 and 15° in 1964. The warmest April 1st were 82° in 2010, 77 in 1946, and 72 in 1978. The coldest maximum days were a cold 29° in 1899 and again in 1911 and 31 in 1965. In Grand Rapids the most snow fall was 4.8” in 1972, 3.9 in 1965 and 3.5” in 1987.
